J1S Workflow: Why Doesn't Changing Glass Thickness Auto-Update Z-Offset?

Hello together
I am a “proud” owner of a J1 (which I upgraded with the cooling fan upgrade kit) so its now a J1S I guess.

I’ve been observing a specific behavior on my Snapmaker J1S and would appreciate some help understanding the relationship between Z-offset calibration (during the print), heated bed leveling (under Calibration) and the setting Maschine Settings: Glass thinkness.

I’m trying to solidify my understanding of the correct procedure for changing the glass thinkness on the Snapmaker J1S, and I’ve made a specific observation I’d like to confirm.

My Core Observation:
I have noticed that the printer’s Z-Offset value is only actively updated when I perform the “Heated Bed Leveling Calibration” process after changing to a different thickness. I would expect (maybe its just me) that if I change the glass thickness the Z-offset is adjusted automatically without the need to run calibration procedure.

I hope someone can tell me here some insight

Thank you in advance
Cheers

I’m not 100% sure, but from experience 90% sure I agree with you. The glass thickness is a value used to set the z offset at the end of calibration.

So no, don’t think it applies live when set. Just at the end of calibration.

Thanks, Wombley, for confirming that observation. That aligns perfectly with my understanding, that the setting acts as a calibration endpoint, not a live adjustment (unfortunately).

Building on that, I have a related calibration question: What’s the recommended method for fine-tuning the Z-Offset on the J1 which not include using the Z-offset calibration during the print?

Specifically, I’m trying to establish a reliable base Z-Offset for both the smooth glass side and the textured side of the build plate. I’m currently seeing slight over-extrusion on the first layer when using the glass side, which suggests my offset needs a minor adjustment for that surface.

Thank you

Don’t know that I can say anything that isn’t just basic printing wisdom.

But I will say, once I set mine, it’s very stable over the long term. I don’t need to touch it until I fiddle with the hotends, really.
