J1S Extruder Slipping/Clicking With PETG
I’m troubleshooting an issue with my Snapmaker J1S where the extruder occasionally slips/skips and makes a clicking sound while printing PETG.
The sound appears to come from the extruder drive mechanism. It seems that the extruder is attempting to push the filament, but the filament encounters enough resistance that the drive gear slips and produces the clicking sound.
The problem is significantly more noticeable with PETG than PLA.
So far I have checked the usual potential causes:
- Filament is dry.
- No obvious nozzle blockage.
- Filament path appears clear.
- Extruder gear appears to be engaging the filament correctly.
- Bed adhesion/first-layer issues do not appear to be involved.
- I have experimented with temperature and printing speed.
I’m trying to determine whether this is a J1S-specific extrusion issue rather than simply a general PETG printing problem.
Possible causes I’m considering:
- Excessive back pressure from the hotend/nozzle
- PETG temperature or flow requirements
- Extruder tension
- Heat creep
- Extruder gear slipping
- Restriction somewhere in the J1S filament path
- A limitation or known issue with the J1S extruder/hotend when printing PETG
Has anyone else experienced extruder
If so, what did you find was actually causing it, and what fixed it?
I’d especially appreciate J1S-specific troubleshooting or modifications, rather than general PETG printing
I did the hotend mod based on Findings and solution for the Snapmaker J1 clogging problem - #134 by 3DPrintMunich
Also I add one 0.5mm M3 spacers on below the springs of the extuder idler. I tried to add 2ea but it seems not enough space for the spring to grab the small pole, hence keep on jumping. I also make sure there is no spacer at the filament sensor. The only thing that I havent done is changing the dual gear to the sharper one.
